Jean-Claude Casadesus, founding director

Real musical Odyssey

Mid-June 2019, the Lille Piano(s) Festival will be celebrating its 15th anniversary with Lille National Orchestra. An eclectic audience will enjoy a real musical Odyssey through the organ, the harpsichord, the clavichord, the marimba, the vibraphone, the synthesizer, the accordion and the bandoneon.

It will be starting on Friday 14th, running through Saturday 15th and closing on Sunday 16th June 2019 with a fabulous concert in the Nouveau Siècle with the great Nelson Freire conducting the emblematic second concerto of Brahms.

For 15 years, the keyboards celebrations in Old Lille have run through a variety of premises: auditoriums, the station, museums, libraries, clubs, the street and even last year, the Abbaye de Vaucelles a couple of miles away.  Year in year out, carefully selected high musical profiles have been regularly invited from every part of the world. Especially young confirmed talents.

Quality, creativity, eclecticism and openness remain the keywords. They have shaped the brightly shining festival in Les Haut de France ever since its inception.

Venues

As to The Nouveau Siècle, the main hosting auditorium, it is situated at the heart of the city centre. You will find nice hotels and eating places all around. It is a superb auditorium with absolutely wonderful acoustics. It is the residence of the Lille National Orchestra. Smaller venues, however, such as the Quebec room,  will welcome smaller size concerts.

In the highlights: Vanessa Wagner and her current music programme. She was described by the daily Le Monde as “the most delightfully peculiar pianist of her generation”. Also the Orchestre de Picardie for two concerts, one with Franck Braley, our Belgian star and trumpet player Romain Leleu. The other with Adam Laloum.

For the first time, in the Cathedral of La Treille, there will be three major organ concerts with Thierry Escaich and Olivier Latry, as well as the chief organist Ghislain Leroy.

Renowned places of Lille, such as for instance La Gare Saint-Sauveur, The Conservatory, The Palace of Fine Arts, ND de la Treille, and the Abbey of Vaucelles open their doors to host all these concerts.

It goes without saying that the moderate price of tickets is certainly a great asset. Of course, the various places and their plural acoustics aim at ever reaching new audiences.  As a result, this also means an opportunity for everyone to redefine one’s approach to concert experiences. Young or old.

For Romantics, the piano of Nicolas Stavy and the writer Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt will focus on  Chopin. On a more modern note, Edouard Ferlet will call technology to the service of virtuosity, in the Carnival of animals.
